Black Jungle Terrarium Supply

By Devin Edmonds

In August of 2002 I took a trip to New England with my family. While I was out there I stopped by at Black Jungle Terrarium Supply to have a look at their greenhouse and frog collection. I have been ordering plants and supplies from black jungle for years and wanted to view their terrariums, frogs, and plants in person. Black jungle has now moved to a new store. The following pictures are from their old location, click on each to enlarge:

Black Jungle's greenhouse - inside view. Richard showed my dad and I around and I have to say I was very impressed. They have a huge collection of plants.

Outside the greenhouse. The plants that are kept outside are some of the north american carnivorous plants.
One of the froglet rearing racks. Most of Black Jungle's rearing tanks were very simple. Sphagnum moss substrate, a few potted plants and a shallow water dish or brazilian nut pod.
::HUGE:: horned frog
The tadpole center. They keep their tadpoles in individual cups. Water changes are done weekly.
A lot of frogs = a lot of frog food = a lot of fruit fly cultures
A view of the left side of their main frog room. I counted over 100 tanks between the 3 rooms where they keep their frogs.
The other side of the main frog room.
Yet another picture of that room.
3 simple terrariums.
A nice terrarium where they keep Dendrobates azureus. Creeping fig was covering every part of the tank including the back wall.
A simple setup housing Phyllobates terribilis that were ready to be shipped.
4 terrariums at the bottom of a stand holding 12 tanks. These terrariums mostly housed thumbnail species like Dendrobates fantasticus and ventrimiculatus.
The top row of tanks on the stand. The soil mixture in these and most of the terrariums is coconut husk fiber mixed with tree fern root on top of 'terra-lite'.
Another picture of the terrariums on that stand. They were all hooked up to an automatic misting system and all had drains in the bottom, it looked like it worked very well.
Dendrobates tinctorius 'citronella'
Phyllobates terribilis 'mint'
This is a picture of the largest display terrarium. It houses Phyllobates terribilis and Epipedobates tricolor along with many interesting plants. A very impressive terrarium!
Dendrobates tinctorius 'blue sipaliwini'
Dendrobates tinctorius - these look a lot like the table mountain tincs but differ in that they have more spots. They almost have a pok-a-dot pattern.
Dendrobates pumilio 'bastimentos'
Dendrobates auratus 'reticulated'
Dendrobates galactonotus '95% orange'
A nice hex terrarium that used to house Dendrobates fantasticus but, at the time I visited, was empty.
This is another large display terrarium that was made by Twin Oaks. There were many interesting plants in it along with a waterfall.
The same large display terrarium.
And one more picture of the terrarium pictured above.
