Henry Vilas Zoo - Behind the Scenes

In the herpetarium and discovery center of Madison, Wisconsin’s Henry Vilas Zoo there are multiple exhibits housing amphibians, but these are not the only ones at the zoo. Behind the scenes many rare and endangered frogs are kept and bred. In cooperation with Zoo Atlanta and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the Henry Vilas Zoo is currently working with over a dozen species of frogs from Panama whose wild populations have been wiped out by the infamous chytrid fungus. Multiple species have now been bred by these zoological institutions, and although this does not ensure the species survival in the wild, it does make certain that their genetic lineage will at least exist in captivity. Below are photographs of some of these frogs along with other amphibians kept behind the scenes at the Henry Vilas Zoo.
